Best Things to do in St. Thomas and St. John

Tour the island

If you have a car, you can do this independently or take a tour (remember you drive on the "wrong" side of the road.)  Start in Charlotte Amalie to see Fort Christian and  99 Steps, then head to Mountain Top for great views of Magens Bay (order a banana daiquiri to enjoy while there) and Sir Francis Drake's Seat. For your last stop, go to Magens Bay for a relaxing swim.

Scuba Diving (or snorkeling) 

Both islands are privy to some of the most transparent waters. You might be lucky enough for the dolphins to swim around you during your safety stop!

Catamaran Sailing Snorkeling Tour

The best way to see the beauty of all of the cays in the US Virgin Islands is to take a sailing tour.  The crew picks out the best spots for snorkeling, where you have the chance to make lots of fun stories and indulge in plenty of rum punch!

Beaches

If you don't want to bring your snorkel gear, rent from Snorkel the WetSide.  They will meet you at your hotel and get you all fitted. Try to visit the beaches on days when there isn't a cruise ship at the port.

Magens Bay

Noted as one of the world's most beautiful spots, this breathtaking bay along St. Thomas' rugged north coast is ideal for swimming and snorkeling with all the convenience of parking, lifeguards, equipment rental, freshwater showers, restaurants and bars. Plan to spend at least half to a whole day here. 

Coki Point Beach

Another beautiful beach that is perfect for snorkeling.  This beach is located next to Coral World Ocean Park, so there is much to see underwater here.  Be prepared for crowds and lots of beach vendors. This is a lively place.

Sapphire Beach

This beach is located on the East end of the island.  It is a favorite for windsurfers. The beach has beautiful views of St. John and offshore cays and offers excellent snorkeling at the reef to the east.

Brewers Bay

This beach is a gem hidden in plain sight, as it is usually not crowded (even on the weekends.)  It is near the University of St. Thomas and is one of the calmest beaches on the island.  The water is crystal clear and is a favorite habitat for Green Sea Turtles and Hawksbill Turtles. Bring your snorkel gear!

St. John Day Trip

Take the car ferry over to St. John if you have a car.  Spend time at Maho Bay Beach, Trunk Bay or Cinnamon Bay Beach.  There are tons of hikes in the Virgin Island National Park if you feel like hiking. The Ram Head Trail is highly recommended. (Note there may be a fee to use these beaches).

Lime Out:  This is a floating taco hut in Hansen Bay on the East End of Saint John.  This green, Caribbean-style cottage on pontoons serves delicious fresh tacos and creative drinks, accessible by boat only.  If you don't have a boat, find a charter that offers trips!  

Sugarcane Grille: Located in the Bunker Hill Hotel, this restaurant serves authentic Caribbean and Island cuisine. It is a little hard to find, but you won't want to miss having a meal (or two) here.  Make sure to order a can of Rum Caipirinha.

Side Street Pub: Tucked down in an alley, this is a great place to stop for breakfast, lunch or dinner if you are in Charlotte Amalie.

The Smoking Rooster: Yummy BBQ joint. You won't be disappointed.

Taphus Beer House: This historical bar was brought back to life in downtown Charlotte Amalie.  They have the largest selection of beers in the city.

Leatherback Brewing Company: This brewery is located on St. Croix, but they have a tasting room on St. Thomas. Make sure to stop by and do a tasting at the beginning of your trip, and then take some local brews with you to enjoy for the remainder of your time on the island.
