Island Hopping to Ios, Greece

The capital of Ios island, Chora, is not to be missed. This picturesque Grecian town is dotted with white houses and narrow, stoney streets. Take your time to stroll through the winding streets in the daytime stopping to marvel at the local jewelry vendors or head to the highest spot in town - Panagia Gremiotissa - just before sunset for an unforgettable view over the Aegean.

For fellow sun worshipers Ios is known to have some of the best beaches in all of Greece and with over 35 beaches, coves and bays, has even played host to some film sets! From sweeping long beaches with golden sand, such as Mylopotas, to tiny little coves set back off the beaten track, you really are spoilt for choice.

If you're looking for your Ancient Greece fix, Ios can provide. Visit the tomb of historian and poet Homer or stop by Skarkos, a Bronze Age settlement close to the port.

The best way to see Ios is by boat. Head down to Mylopotas beach and grab a tour with local firm Meltemi Watersports who are experts on the island. Visit several swim stops, learn the history of the nudist beach and remember your waterproof case for the best Instagram opportunities.

If boat trips aren't your thing, renting a car or quad is another brilliant way to see the island. With just one main road, navigation is super simple and allows for as much exploration as you could wish for! Stop for lunch in a taverna along Mylopotas beach before hitting the road for an afternoon of discovery.

Ios - like a lot of Greece - is also known for it's windmills. Head up to the very top of Chora town to marvel at twelve structures that look over the Aegean sea. On your way up, stop at the small but beautiful church, Agios Nikolaos.

In the 1970s, Ios was once known for its crazy party's. Although the island has since adopted a much more chilled vibe, the locals still know how to have a good time. Spend all day at one of the islands many beach clubs and watch the sun go down with a cocktail in hand. Try Far Out if you're looking for a disco or opt for Pathos is sunset vibes are more your thing.

Breakfast

Yialos Hotel: Open to outside guests, Yialos Hotel is moments from Chora port and provides a beautifully authentic buffet breakfast. Made fresh by three giagiá's (grandma's) in the open kitchen, expect Greek pastries, yoghurt and honey as well as the best cup of coffee on the island.

Lunch & Dinner

Salt: A stones throw from Mylopotas beach, Salt is the perfect place to grab lunch halfway through your beach day. Leave your towels on the sand, throw on an over shirt and order your first cocktail of the day. After that, indulge in their Orzo or Greek Salad - the perfect way to refuel after sunbathing all morning.

The Nest: Nestled down a Chora Town alleyway, The Nest is as authentic as it gets. Expect the biggest portions of souvlaki and fried halloumi and wash it all down with a local beer. Ask to sit outside and dine amongst the herb garden.

Ios Club: Just across from Chora Town, Ios Club provides unrivalled views of the island - not only that, but the venue itself boasts interior to die for. Feast on a a menu of local flavours and experimental cocktails as you witness one of the best sunsets the island has to offer.

Katogi: Blink and you'll miss it, Katogi Tavern is tucked away in Chora Town down the tighest of alleyways, but the queue of hungry visitors outside lets you know all you need to. With sittings only at 7pm and 9pm each day, Katogi's Greek tapas is not to be missed. Be warned: you could be waiting a while if you rock up without a booking!

Drinks

Harmony Ios: Sat on a hill overlooking Mylopotas beach, this Mexican bar and restaurant always has something going on. From live music to evening yoga, Harmony is the perfect spot to end a beach day.

Far Out: Cocktails by the beach more your vibe? Head on over to Far Out Beach Club at the end of Mylopotas for an extensive drinks menu and good music. With servers that visit your sun loungers, you won't have to travel far to order and you can even grab food if you're peckish.
