My travel style
I love doing that extra bit of research that takes me to the paths less traveled, and a more local, authentic experience of a destination. I'm equally a fan of a pristine crowd-free beach, a historic building rich with stories of the past or a magical nature encounter. I often find novels that are set in the places I visit, to enrich the experience even more. When I travel, I balance seeing sights with times for kicking back in my hotel, and that's why the hotel environment is so important. My favorite hotels are either in historic buildings that have been given beautiful luxe renovations or those designed to merge in with the nature that they're surrounded by – I love a tropical garden and luxury outdoor bathroom!

An 'onsen' with a view of Mount Fuji in Japan.
The lush, nutmeg-scented mountains of 'Spice Island' Grenada.
The palm-lined courtyard pool of a Marrakech 'riad'.
One thing I can't travel without...
A novel set in the place I'm visiting, or a book by a local author.
Two truths, one lie:
I've been detained by immigration in Brazil and Jordan.
I was 18 on my first solo international trip and had a 24 hour layover in Moscow's airport.
I worked as a bank clerk in Zambia for six months.
