Catarina’s Take
For me Mexico City is a grand, vibrant and dynamic city. There’s so much energy and history in Mexico City. I love the combination of the architecture, food and the different neighborhoods. It's really impressive – even just the size of it. There is a museum dedicated to Frida Kahlo, my favorite artist who is loved by many. I love her because she was a disabled Latina icon. It was always my dream to be able to go to Mexico City and then visit Casa Azul in Coyoacán because of my love for her.

Things to do in Mexico City
Arts & culture
Immerse yourself in Mexican culture and history at Murales de Diego Rivera en La Secretaría de Educación Pública where you can tour outer courtyards, stairways and three floors featuring hundreds of murals representing Rivera's perspective on Mexico's past.
You can’t visit Mexico City neighborhoods without taking the time to visit Frida Kahlo Casa Azul in Coyoacán, where she lived most of her life with Diego Rivera and where she later died in a room on the upper floor.
Enjoy one of the largest city parks in the Western Hemisphere, Chapultepec Park or Bosque Chapultepec, located at the heart of Mexico City where you will find some of the oldest and most visited sites such as the Chapultepec Zoo and the National Museum of Anthropology.
Day trips
Drive 50 miles west of Mexico City to trek with Nómada Mexico to Nevado de Toluca. Dress warmly because this hike is to the top of Mexico’s fourth highest peak. You will be given equipment, a packed lunch and will be good hands with this internationally renowned mountain guiding company.
Take a local bus to the UNESCO World Heritage site of Teotihuacán, a Mesoamerican city located about 30 miles northeast of Mexico City that once supported a population of 125,000 to 200,000 making it one of the largest cities in the world. Bring sun protection and wear comfortable shoes. Here you will find The Pyramid of the Sun, one of the largest structures of its type in the Western Hemisphere.

A note from Catarina
My experience making Mexican salsas was with Natalia. You start the class at the market near Natalia’s house which is in a local working class neighborhood. She takes you to an open air market to shop for fresh ingredients and teaches you how to pick the right peppers. At her house, Natalia sets up the cooking class and provides beautiful patterned aprons. Learn how to make three different sauces. Each has their unique preparation techniques like roasting peppers over fire. It is really fun and super delicious.
